Smart automations: hold, pause and the "why did this happen" answer

A one-second cloud should not switch the boiler on and off. That is why rules in HoumeOS have a hold and a pause between executions, and every decision is logged with an explanation — executed, skipped, waiting or error.

Most smart home systems make the mistake of reacting to every flicker in the data. A cloud for a second over the panels, a brief spike in consumption, a sensor jitter — and the appliances start switching on and off. That is not intelligence, it is noise.

Hold and pause: let the home stop "flickering"

A fast change of state should not immediately pull the relays. That is why every rule in HoumeOS can have:

  • Hold — the condition must be true for a set time (for example 60 seconds) before the action fires. A one-off spike does not light the boiler.
  • Pause between executions — a minimum distance in time between two identical actions (for example 30 minutes). This protects the relays and stops the home from needlessly interrupting its work.

This matters most for the heat pump and the boiler, which run most efficiently when smooth and dislike frequent on/off cycling.

You always know "why"

"Why did the boiler turn on?" — in most systems there is no answer. In HoumeOS every automation decision is recorded with an explanation and a clear state:

  • executed — the action was carried out;
  • skipped — the condition was not met;
  • waiting — in hold state;
  • pause — blocked by the minimum interval;
  • disabled — the rule is turned off;
  • error — the action could not be carried out.

Transparency is part of trust. When the home does something you did not expect, you do not guess — you open the log and see the reason.

Modes: one button for the whole house

Automations do not run blind — they respect the home mode. Available today are the global modes Home, Away, Night and Holiday, each with a ready set of actions. Rules execute only in the modes where you allow them: during "Night" you do not water the garden, and in "Away" you do not heat the living room. The modes are part of the wider logic of scenarios and modes.

What this means for you

  • Fewer worn contacts — hold and pauses stop meaningless switching.
  • A more predictable home — the same conditions lead to the same actions, with no surprising turn-ons.
  • Full control — you understand the logic behind every decision instead of wondering whether the system is "broken".

An honest note

Hold and pause are per-rule settings, not magic default values — the right numbers depend on your appliances and habits. That is why we tune them for the specific home during a demonstration and site survey, rather than from a template.
