Smart home without internet: how local automation works

Why cloud dependence is a risk, and how a single local server keeps rules, modes and security running even when the connection drops.

Most "smart" devices rely on a cloud service: when the internet drops, key scenarios stop, and in the worst case you cannot open the door or shut off the heating. Local automation takes the cloud out of the critical path.

What "local" actually means

The logic, the data and the permissions live on a small server inside your own network (LAN). Rules — "if the sun is shining and the battery is full, switch on the water heater" — execute there, not on a remote server owned by some manufacturer.

What keeps working when the connection drops

  • Every scenario and rule continues to run.
  • The wall panel and dashboards stay live — the interface comes from the local server.
  • Telemetry and history keep recording; nothing is lost.
  • Security (alarm, hazards, access) never depends on an external link.

And remote access?

Optionally, you can enable a protected tunnel into your network — you decide when and from where. The difference is that remote access is an extra, not a condition for the system to function. That way the home stays under your control even when the internet isn't.
