Smart alarm and emergency scenarios: how the home protects itself
From water and gas leaks to access control with roles and PINs — how local automation turns separate sensors into a connected security system that keeps working without internet.
A leak sensor on its own only beeps. The real value appears when separate devices work as one connected system: a signal triggers an action, you learn about it immediately, and the logic executes locally — even if the internet is down.
Security is a system, not separate devices
HoumeOS brings sensors, cameras, locks and alarm states into a single logic. One and the same scenario can switch on the lighting, send a notification and close off access — without every device living in its own private app.
What we watch
- Water leaks — sensors under the washing machine, dishwasher, water heater and under-counter appliances; on a signal, solenoid valves cut the supply.
- Gas (methane, LPG) and carbon monoxide — alarm, boiler shutoff, ventilation prompt and a notification.
- Smoke and fire — early warning and a prompt showing the evacuation route.
- Open doors and windows — the state of each zone, especially with the alarm armed.
- Motion and foreign presence — indoor and outdoor zones with different rules.
What happens when an alarm fires
An alarm is not just a sound. On an event the system runs actions you defined in advance:
- it turns on lighting along the path and in the suspicious zone;
- it sends a notification to the dashboards and the phone;
- it secures unprotected access and starts recording video;
- on a hazard (water or gas) it shuts off the source before the damage grows.
Access control: roles and PINs
Not everyone needs full rights, so access is split into levels:
- Administrator — full rights and configuration;
- Household — daily control, modes and scenarios;
- Guest — lighting and scenarios only, with doors, garage and alarm out of reach.
Every code has a name and an expiry. You see who entered, when and through which door — without ever handing over the master key. The details of how PINs are stored and audited are in Access security: roles, double confirmation, PIN hashing and audit.
Why local matters in emergency scenarios
If the logic lives in a cloud, a dropped connection means a blind, helpless system exactly when you need it most. With local automation, the alarm, the emergency actions and access control keep working without internet; remote notification is an extra, not a condition.
What to expect
The specific sensors and valves depend on the property, but the principle is the same: fewer false alarms, faster real reactions and a complete history of events. That is why we draw the security scheme after a site survey, never in advance.
